History of the Memorial Fund

Since our father's death, and beginning in 1999, we have held annual fundraisers with the proceeds being donated to various charities. We are pleased to tell you that we have had an overwhelming response from the community. On behalf of our entire family, we would like to thank all of you who have participated in these fundraisers in memory of our Dad.

To kick off the fundraiser each year, the Shake Family makes a $5,000 donation on December 5th in memory of our father.  In addition, we also donate 10% of the gross proceeds on December 5th from our restaurants, Old Fisherman's Grotto, The Fish Hopper, Isabella's Italian Seafood, Cabo's Wild Mexican Seafood, and Lattitudes at Lover's Point.

This year's goal is to raise $35,000 by midnight on Christmas Eve. We need your help to accomplish this.

A Letter of Thanks from The Salvation Army:
"Now that the holidays are over, and we can look back at the last couple of months, we can see the tremendous help provided to us by the Monterey Peninsula area. Over 1300 families assisted, 7,000 toys given, food boxes distributed, holiday dinners, shut-ins visited, and people clothed, fed sheltered. This represents a 50% increase in the number of people assisted this year in comparison to last year. I want to thank you for all that you did to help us make that happen. Sincerely yours, Tedd Lowcock, Major, Corp Officer, Monterey Peninsula"
2003 The Salvation Army - Monterey Peninsula Corps
TOTAL COLLECTED - $20,326.56
The Salvation Army's Operation Christmas Cheer Program helps those in need during the Christmas holiday season. The circumstances of each person or family vary, however, the needs are the same. They have hit on hard times, some by job loss due to the current economy and others hit hard by illness of a family member. The Salvation Army reviews each case separately and decides which family is in the most urgent need. This program offers our local people who are suffering this holiday season some relief by helping them get "back on their feet".
2002 Food Bank of Monterey County
2002 was an extremely difficult year because of a shortage in food donations at the local food banks. The Food Bank of Monterey County operates various programs such as the Agency Clearing House, Emergency Food Assistance Program, Food for Children, Congregate Feeding Sites, Senior Brown Bag and also the on-site Community Pantry. The Food Bank of Monterey County has a unique challenge with the large geographical area that they serve. Distribution sites extend as far south as King City, north to Pajaro, throughout the Peninsula, and to Salinas. They serve the working poor, no and low income families and individuals, the elderly, the chronically ill and the homeless population. They are the largest supplier of emergency supplemental food in Monterey County. They also supply a distribution network of 135 non-profit agencies that provide emergency and supplemental food to those in need.
2001 World Vision & Salvation Army
World Vision helps victims around the world who have been devastated and traumatized by natural disasters such as floods, cyclones, droughts, wars, etc. In 2001, the project was the Afghan Refugee Relief. Even before the September 11th attack on the United States and the resulting war, people in Afghanistan were living in tenuous circumstances due to the ongoing civil strife and a three-year drought (the worst in 30 years which have affected more than 12 million people). People who have fled the country number more than 1 million. On September 28, 2001, World Vision declared the situation the highest level of humanitarian emergency. World Vision along with other agencies designed an overall strategy for response that included intervention such as construction and oversight of refugee camps, primary health care, water and sanitation and psycho-social programs.

2000 Mother Teresa Missionaries

From 1931 to 1948 Mother Teresa taught at St. Mary's High School in Calcutta, but the suffering and poverty she glimpsed outside the convent walls made such a deep impression on her that in 1948 she received permission from her superiors to leave the convent school and devote herself to working among the poorest of the poor in the slums of Calcutta. Although she had no funds, she depended on Divine Providence, and started an open-air school for slum children. Soon she was joined by voluntary helpers, and financial support was also forthcoming. This made it possible for her to extend the scope of her work.

On October 7, 1950, Mother Teresa received permission from the Holy See to start her own order, "The Missionaries of Charity", whose primary task was to love and care for those persons nobody was prepared to look after. In 1965 the Society became an International Religious Family by a decree of Pope Paul VI.

Today the order comprises Active and Contemplative branches of Sisters and Brothers in many countries. In 1963 both the Contemplative branch of the Sisters and the Active branch of the Brothers was founded. In 1979 the Contemplative branch of the Brothers was added, and in 1984 the Priest branch was established.

The Society of Missionaries has spread all over the world, including the former Soviet Union and Eastern European countries. They provide effective help to the poorest of the poor in a number of countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and they undertake relief work in the wake of natural catastrophes such as floods, epidemics, and famine, and for refugees. The order also has houses in North America, Europe and Australia, where they take care of the shut-ins, alcoholics, homeless, and AIDS sufferers.

The Missionaries of Charity throughout the world are aided and assisted by Co-Workers who became an official International Association on March 29, 1969. By the 1990s there were over one million Co-Workers in more than 40 countries. Along with the Co-Workers, the lay Missionaries of Charity try to follow Mother Teresa's spirit and charism in their families.

Mother Teresa's work has been recognised and acclaimed throughout the world and she has received a number of awards and distinctions, including the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize (1971) and the Nehru Prize for her promotion of international peace and understanding (1972). She also received the Balzan Prize (1979) and the Templeton and Magsaysay awards.
