Memorializing Sabu Shake |
| Whereas,
it was with great sadness and a deep sense of loss that word
was received of the death of Sabu Shake on December 5, 1998, a
distinguished Monterey resident, whose character and deeds in
life merit gratitude and respectful acknowledgement by the
people of California; and
Whereas, Sabu Shake, who
turned a dishwashing job on Monterey's Fisherman's Wharf into
a family empire, was the owner of the Old Fisherman's Grotto
and the Monterey Sport Fishing fleet in Monterey, the Marina
Beach Inn in Marina, and various real estate, and |

Whereas, Born on
November 22, 1922, in Karachi, Pakistan, Sabu Shake was the son of wild animal
dealers, served during World War II in the Merchant Marines; and
Whereas, He immigrated
to the United States in 1950 and lived in Los Angeles and Sacramento prior to
settling in Monterey in 1954, and he went to work on the wharf as a dishwasher
in the old Lou's Fish Grotto, which was the site of the present Domenico's on the
Wharf; and
Whereas, He worked his way up to cook, and in 1958
bought a space across the wharf, a small eatery that soon combined with a
neighboring property to become the Old Fisherman's Grotto; and

Whereas, Over the years, he blended his own brand of
spices, canned his own clam chowder, operated a cattle ranch in Gonzales, owned
a cruise ship, bought one of the fishing companies on the wharf, and built the
motel in the Marina dunes; and
Whereas, He was named Fisherman's Wharf Person of the
Year in 1991 by the Fisherman's Wharf Association, and an organization named The
Best of the Best selected him as the restaurateur of the year in 1993; and
Whereas, Mr. Shake's trademark for 30 years has been a
white cowboy hat that was given to him by then-Sheriff Jack Davenport for his
loyal support; and

Whereas, Mr. Shake enjoyed tending to the six-acre
garden he developed next to his residence in Monterey, and he regularly entered
his roses in competitions; and

|
| Whereas, The high esteem in which he was held by his
loving family, his numerous friends, and other individuals fortunate enough to
have known him stands as a testament for others who strive for the best in life,
and his memory will live forever in the hearts and minds of those people who
knew him; and |

Whereas, His memory will be cherished by his wife,
Isabella; his sons, Benji, Christopher, Sabu Jr., Angelo, David and Tene; and
nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; now, therefore, be it
|
|
|
Resolved by Senator Bruce McPherson,
That the exemplary life, outstanding achievements, and illustrious record of
professional accomplishment and civic achievement of Sabu Shake be memorialized
henceforth and hereafter, and that his bereaved family and friends be extended
heartfelt sympathy. |
